Introduction

The purpose of this research is to examine the information systems used by Ultra Standard Distributors, the nation's leading distributor and marketer of hair care products and beauty products. Our group will conduct research on Ultra Standard Distributors and interview their MIS Manager to determine the information systems used, as well as the company's strengths, weaknesses, and best practices. We will focus on how their daily objectives are met using the platforms, software, and systems they use, and we will make recommendations to improve the company's operations. 


Who are Ultra Standard Distributors?


Ultra/Standard Distributors has been an industry leader in the distribution of specialized beauty products for over 40 years. They are pioneers in the multicultural hair care revolution. Ultra/Standard distributes over 6,000 SKUs that cater to all categories of multicultural beauty care: shipping 95% of orders same day and maintaining an average in-stock percentage of 99%. They are more than a traditional wholesale/distributor, Ultra/Standard is the nation’s leading distributor and marketer of specialty beauty care products focusing on developing and implementing best in class sales, marketing, visual merchandising, and logistical programs. Known as data driven decision makers, other key components of their corporate DNA include groundbreaking innovation and foresight as well as strategic collaborative approach to relationships. They are proudly a four-time winner of the “Distributor of the Year” Award by the American Health and Beauty aid Institute (AHBAI).


The company was founded in 1972 by Carl Olla, later sold in 1992 to Steve Ditvito then sold to Quality King in 2001. Ultra Standard Distributors was created in 2003 purchasing Metro Distributors in 2003 and Beauty Enterprise in 2021. There are approximately 113 employees working for Ultra Standard Distributors as of November 2022. Ultra Standard Distributors is located in Elmwood Park, NJ with the corporate office in Bellport, NY. 



In December 2021, Ultra Standard Distributors procured Beauty Enterprises, LLC, one of its rivals in the cosmetics and hair care sectors. The acquisition reduces competition because many manufacturers are forced to work with Ultra Standard Distributors when retailers forbid doing business directly with manufacturers.
